Xilonen 3 Day Ceremony
White Hawk Indian Council for Children, Iztatutli is excited to invite you all for another year of our rites of passage ceremony in which we as a community honor our young women. Xilonen is a rite of passage ceremony, a coming of age for young women that dates back thousand of years before the Spanish invasion.
Day 1
On the first day we invite the soon to be Xilonens to a women's sweat lodge in the evening, a rebirthing ceremony of purification, and spiritual healing. It is a sacred space where you experience physical, emotional, and spiritual cleansing. Here we pray, sing and talk.
Day 2
On the 2nd day of the ceremony, we adorn the ceremonial grounds with flowers in a circle and set up 4 main Altars where the young Xilonens receive advice and gifts. Each Xilonen receives a crown made of flowers. They dress themselves in their Xilonen regalia dress, which they have worked on themselves in preparation for this day. The Xilonen regalia is beautifully adorned with symbols of maize and flowers, embodying the essence of life, sustenance, and nourishment that strengthen our bodies. The flowers further represent the elegance and deep-rooted traditions of the ceremony, highlighting the beauty and cultural significance of this sacred ritual. Dances are performed as a vital part of this ceremony, symbolizing the connection between the community, the earth, all my relations, and the Creator. In the past, we have had as many as 300 dancers who come from other parts of California and as far away as Mexico to partake in this ceremony. As hosts, we provide the dancers with fruit and water during the ceremony, and at the end of the day, we celebrate with a meal.
Day 3
On the 3rd day, we continue to pray and dance, honoring the Xilonen, and close with a sweat lodge and meal. This is the end of our 3 day ceremony but a life long commitment for each Xilonen.
